Dr Martin Strong, BVSc, MANZCVS (sas)
After graduation in 1993 from Sydney University he
began working with Dr Robert Zammit and had the
opportunity to increase his knowledge and skills in all
aspects of small animal veterinary science with the
particular interests in small animal reproduction.  In
1997 Martin bought the practice  and has enjoyed
improving the facilities and services provided to our

In 2001 Martin completed further study in small animal
surgery and obtained his membership to the Australian
College of Veterinary Science which has enhanced his
knowledge and skills in this field.  Since then his
education has continued and in 2007 he was certified by
the University of Pennsylvania to submit Penn Hip
XRays and was accredited by AQIS in 2008 to perform
pre-export examinations. Further training has led to
Martin now performing cruciate ligament repairs with
the TTA method and he is having great success.

In his leisure time he enjoys riding and training horses,
kayaking and playing with his dog.
Dr Ali Bumak graduated from Sydney
University in 2008 and began her professional
career in Dalby, Queensland.  She worked in a
busy mixed animal practice, gaining a particular
interest in equine dentistry and all aspects of small
animal veterinary medicine and surgery.

Ali then spent 6 months travelling in Canada before
returning to "God's own country" in the Hunter
Valley;  she has been working with us since
December 2013.  She has furthered her education
in equine dentistry and small animal surgery since
being at Motto Farm and loves spending her free
time playing with her beautiful dog and riding her
Dr Ross Barter.   After  graduating from The
University of Sydney in 1988, Ross worked in mixed
practice for 7 years, before concentrating on small
animal practice.  He has worked in Australia, New
Zealand and England, including 5 years at the RSPCA
Newcastle and 7 years as an emergency vet at the
Newcastle Animal Referral and Emergency Centre
[NAREC]. Ross has a particular interest in ultrasound
and cardiology  and has  completed many post-graduate
courses in these fields.  On his days off Ross operates
Newcastle Veterinary Ultrasound, performing
ultrasound examinations for referring veterinarians.
Ross is married with 2 children, 4 cats, 1 rabbit  and
often several foster kittens.
Melissa Cowan - Melissa joined our team in
2006 and since then has completed her
Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing.  She enjoys
looking after a variety of sick and injured
animals. Melissa is the head nurse at our hospital
and is and integral part of our team. We would
be lost without her organising the staff and
especially the vets!
Liz is a certificate IV qualified nurse and loves  
caring for her patients . She has been working
within this career since entering the work force
Ashleigh Bruinsma has joined our
team and brings with her a wealth of
knowledge and experience. She has been
nursing for 20 years and always has your
animal's best interest at heart.  When not at
work Ashleigh enjoys spending time with
her family, fishing and riding horses
Karen Manuel  first worked as a veterinary nurse
in 1989 . She loves her cats, dogs and horses and gets
a lot of satisfaction in seeing the animals in her care
return to health.
Rhonda Vidler started with us when
she was in TAFE and since graduating,
with her Veterinary Nursing Certificate IV,
she has continued to work with us. Her
dedication, even at this early stage of her
career, is admirable.
She has  four fantastic boys at home to
keep her occupied in her time away from
work and she also has a collection of
animals including an old shepherd cross
whom she rescued
Kassie  Edwards continuing to study for
her Veterinary Nursing qualification Certificate
IV whist working with us. She has great
compassion for the many cases that she
nurses and is enjoying being exposed to the
many aspects of the work at Motto Farm
Veterinary Hospital.  Cassie loves nothing
better on her time off than to take her beautiful
border collie to the beach.
